Covid-19 update: Business grants payments top £5.7 million in Barrow

MORE than £5.7 million in cash grants from the government have been paid to businesses across Barrow.


The money had been shared across a total of 495 firms in the borough by Friday, April 24, with payments continuing every day.


Hundreds more eligible firms are being urged to provide their details to Barrow Borough Council so they, too, can receive a one-off, non-repayable sum.


Barrow Borough Council leader, Councillor Ann Thomson, said: “We are delighted to see this money going directly out to businesses across the borough to help them through this incredibly difficult time.


“Our teams have worked hard to verify and process the information we have received with hundreds of thousands of pounds being transferred to business accounts every day.


“We are continuing the work through the information businesses have provided us with,  but more must apply.


“Hundreds of businesses in Barrow are eligible for cash grants promised to them by the government.


“We would urge people to get in touch so we can make sure those eligible receive this money as soon as possible.”


There are thought to be around 1,300 firms across the borough eligible for one of two schemes announced by the government.


They are:


Small businesses which already receive Small Business Rate Relief or Rural Rate Relief. They can apply for a one off cash grant of £10,000 to help with ongoing business costs, even if the relief is 100 per cent.

Businesses operating in the hospitality, leisure or retail sector. They can apply for a one off cash grant of £25,000 if they have a rateable value of between £15,000 and £51,000.

Around 500 businesses in Barrow have not yet been in touch with Barrow Borough Council to claim their grant.

Letters have been sent to the business address of those thought to be eligible while a dedicated team of council staff are also attempting to make contact via telephone.

But there is concern that some business owners are not taking advantage of a cash grant because they incorrectly believe it will have to be paid back.

Cllr Thomson added: “This money will not have to be repaid. It is a cash sum designed to help businesses during what will be a very worrying and difficult time for them.


“Accessing it is simply a case of emailing or posting the information we need so we can check and process payment.


“Please check if your business is eligible. This money is here and available to help.”


To access the grants, businesses will need to supply:


  • Ratepayer name


  • Business address


  • Business rates account number


  • Companies House number (where applicable)


  • VAT number (where applicable)


  • Bank account details


  • A copy of your most recent bank statement
