Covid-19 update: Dedicated housing options team offer help and support

DEDICATED help and support for anyone who is homeless or facing homelessness in Barrow continues to be available despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Members of Barrow Borough Council’s housing options team are making sure those facing difficulties can continue to access a 24/7 service.

Contact can be made over the phone or by email while the face to face counter service in Barrow Town Hall remains closed.

Councillor Kevin Hamilton, Barrow Borough Council spokesperson for Housing, said: “The dedicated options team will continue to offer support to anyone who needs help it and to identify anyone sleeping rough on the streets of the borough.

“The coronavirus outbreak has caused some disruption to council services to protect the safety of staff and residents as we take all precautions to stop its spread and relieve pressure on the NHS.

“But we want to offer an assurance that the housing options team are still here to help and are committed to doing all they can to maintain the 24/7 homelessness support service in the borough.”

Barrow Borough Council’s housing options team supports people in temporary housing and works flexibly to support those who have complex needs and challenges.

They also have direct access to social housing or private rented housing for short or long term stays, as well as those required at short notice, while they also work with key partners to find solutions to support people into housing.

The council’s choice-based lettings scheme, run through Cumbria Choice Lettings, has been temporarily suspended to allow the team more flexibility to support the most vulnerable in the area into some form of housing.

Cllr Hamilton added: “Our key priority is to make sure people are able to access support and help if they are homeless or facing homelessness.

“We want people to know that help is at hand when they need it most. This hasn’t changed. The team are here to help as always.”

The housing options team can be contacted on 01229 876374 or 01229 876458. The out of hours number is 01229 833311.
