BARROW Town Hall is to be illuminated with the Union Jack flag tonight in honour of the Lionesses’ historic England UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 win.
The team secured a 2-1 victory against Germany in the final at Wembley Stadium yesterday following a stunning journey throughout the tournament.
The team included Barrow’s own Georgia Stanway who secured the winning goal against Spain in the quarter-final to propel the England team into the crucial next stage of the competition.
Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, and Barrow Mayor Councillor Hayley Preston congratulated the Lionesses on their win and for inspiring a generation of women and girls to play football.
“On behalf of the whole borough we are absolutely delighted for the Lionesses on their historic win and our congratulations go to them all.
“Their years of hard work, talent and dedication to football paid off in the most incredible way and it was nothing short of inspiring to see them lift the trophy in Wembley Stadium last night.
“They have earned their place in the history books and should be so proud of the message they are sending - that women and girls can excel at the highest level in any sport or sphere.
“Our particular congratulations must also go to Georgia Stanway. She was simply outstanding and it was an honour to see her on the pitch, representing her country, in a tournament that will never be forgotten.
“We send her our best wishes for her move to Bayern Munich.”
Barrow Town Hall will sport the Union Jack Flag this evening to mark the celebrations that are taking place nationwide.
