The Government has announced a package of support to help households with rising energy bills.
The scheme is for households in England whose primary residence is valued in Council Tax bands A-D. You will not need to pay it back and it will not be treated as income for tax or benefit purposes. You will only be entitled to one £150 payment per household.
The Council has only recently received government guidance and does not yet have the funding for the scheme.
This will not be included in the council tax bill and will be paid separately with the council tax system used to ascertain household eligibility.
Software to facilitate the payment process is not expected to be in place to make payments until May at the earliest.
If you currently pay your council tax by direct debit, the £150 energy rebate will be paid directly into your bank account - you will not need to do anything.
For households that do not pay by direct debit, please be assured, the council will write to you once a process is in place.
For those households that need help with their energy bills but are not eligible under the criteria of the above, Government scheme – such as households on income support in higher bands (E-H) - there will be a discretionary scheme available.
Further information will be put on the Barrow Borough Council website as soon as it becomes available.
Our teams are currently receiving a high level of calls and correspondence at this time. If you have an enquiry regarding this matter we would ask that you please check the website for further updates over the coming months.
