A statement from Councillor Ann Thomson, Barrow Borough Council leader, following a report of a hate crime on Saturday, August 22:
"Undoubtedly, one of the greatest things about Barrow is its friendly people and inclusive communities.
"This is why I am shocked and saddened by the report of a hate crime in our borough this weekend. We send our thoughts to those affected by it.
"Thankfully, this is a rare occurrence. We have absolutely no room or tolerance for behaviour fuelled by hate.
"Barrow is a wonderful place. With our rich industrial heritage, beautiful buildings, incredible wildlife and a protected coastline, it's a location unlike anywhere else in the world.
"We want to share the things we are fortunate enough to have on our doorstep with anyone who wants to come and visit, live and work in our borough. We encourage people to come here and we welcome them with open arms."
