Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA)
The latest Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) document which covers the Barrow Borough is the SHMA Addendum 2017, produced by Arc4. This document updates the 2016 SHMA and is informed and supported by the Demographic Analysis and Forecasts Technical Report produced by Edge Analytics.
The SHMA examines the current and likely future housing market in terms of both the number and types of dwellings that are likely to be required, including the levels of open market, affordable housing and specialist/supported housing for groups including older people. It also suggests how many new houses will be needed annually over the plan period which has been translated into the Local Plan housing requirement.
The SHMA has been informed by the latest government household and population projections and locally derived economic and employment projections. A household survey was also carried out in 2013 where questionnaires were sent to around 9500 households across the Borough, chosen entirely randomly to collect a range of housing related information.

Housing Land Statement 2017 (HLS)
The Council is required to identify a 5 year supply of deliverable housing sites (plus a 20% buffer where required) to meet its housing requirements. The housing land supply is important: the NPPF states that "relevant policies for the supply of housing should not be considered up-to-date if the local planning authority cannot demonstrate a five-year supply of deliverable housing sites."
