Further Education

Barrow has two colleges for education at 16+:

Furness College & Barrow 6th Form College

Furness College is a general further education college in Barrow-in-Furness, South Cumbria. The colleges Channelside campus is on an industrial development park and was opened in 1992. This campus has modern buildings for construction, engineering, science, catering, hairdressing and beauty therapy. The college offers a wide range of mainly vocational provision within nine of the programme areas funded by the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC). The provision ranges from foundation to higher level courses.

Barrow Sixth Form College is one of the few purpose-built sixth form colleges in the country and unique within Cumbria. The buildings have been specially designed for students over the age of sixteen and include facilities for physically disabled students. A new wing and extensive alterations including a new library have enhanced the accommodation and help to provide an attractive learning environment. The College is a community of over 800 students and a well-qualified, experienced and capable staff.

University of Cumbria

The University of Cumbria was formed on 1st August 2007 formally, from an amalgamation of St Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire.

The University has campuses in Carlisle, Newton Rigg, Penrith, Ambleside and Lancaster and a specialist teacher-education centre in London. The University also has strong links and close partnership working with the four FE Colleges in Cumbria (Lakes Colleges, Furness College, Carlisle College and Kendal College) to enable HE delivery locally across the county. In addition, the University is the lead institution of Cumbria Higher Learning, a Distributed Learning Network for Cumbria.

Lancaster University

In 2008 Lancaster University was ranked as the top institution in the North West in four national league tables. The Sunday Times league table and the Times follow similar success in other national rankings this year, including the Guardian and Independent league tables which place Lancaster in the top 10 and 12th nationally and top in the North West.
