Barrow is surrounded by miles of beaches, each unique in character and conveniently accessible to the town centre. Hints and tips on how to enjoy our coastal wildlife.
Among the better known beaches are:
Earnse Bay
By far Barrow's most popular beach and the ideal place to take a dip. Also known as West Shore. This beach is a venue for national kitesurfing championships. This sandy beach is served by local buses and becomes very busy during the summer months. Car parking and toilet facilities are available.

Biggar Bank
This beach is located on the exposed west coast of Walney Island, a mixture of smooth pebbles and sand makes up this softly contoured coastline. Ample car parking facilities.

Roanhead
This sandy, picturesque beach is situated three miles north of Barrow. Even though strong currents make it unsuitable for swimming, the coastal scenery is quite breathtaking. Car parking and toilet facilities are available. The National Trust run lots of activities for children including pond dipping in school holidays.

Rampside
This easily accessible pebble beach is approximately four miles south-east of Barrow. It is ideal for those with a liking for water sports. A causeway leads to Roa Island, which has toilets, bus stop, pub, restaurant and cafe. Visitors can enjoy the Barrow Lifeboat Station (open at weekends during the Summer tel: (01229) 829797 and take the ferry to Piel Island. The long stony beach is situated on the coast road (A5087) heading towards the market town of Ulverston.
