Furness Climate Change Citizens’ Jury

Making sure the public have a say in what happens to tackle climate change is part of our Climate Change Policy, and a citizens' jury is one way we can engage with our residents on this issue.

With the support of the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership and National Lottery funding, we were able to launch our Furness Climate Change Citizens' Jury who have convened to consider the question:

What should happen in the Furness area to address the emergency of climate change?

The 20 members of the Jury will share opinions, discuss ideas and hear from a range of experts before working together to agree a set of recommendations. The Jury will meet for 10 Tuesday evening sessions over a three-month period starting on 16th November and finishing on 8th February 2022 with a 3 week break over the Christmas period.

The jury is made up of a mini-population of the Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council area.

To make sure that the citizens' jury is run fairly, an Oversight Panel has been set up with representatives from: Barrow Borough Council, Cumbria County Council, BAE Systems, Cando FM, Spirit Energy, Holker Group, Furness College, Extinction Rebellion Furness, Cumbria Action for Sustainability and Simon Fell, MP for Barrow & Furness.

It will be delivered by Shared Future, one of the UK’s leading experts in organising citizens’ assemblies and juries.
